All-Nations-Cook-along-Temole-Soup-recipe-mexico

It’s Thursday and today for our All Nations Cook-Along🥙 we have an 8 minute video for a secret family recipe for Temole Soup. ¡HOLA MEXICO! 🇲🇽

Rocio is one of our mum volunteers from the Spanish-speaking Drop-in Program at Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House. She volunteered to make this amazing video introducing not only the recipe, but also her family and the beautiful memories associated with it. We believe sharing a family’s food story is a way to preserve part of our heritage through which we find connections, strengths and wisdom. We’d like to share this lovely conversation we had with Rocio about the recipe and hope it’s somehow inspiring for you too.

Q: Can you introduce to us what “Temole” means? There seems to be no information available on the internet for this word.

A: I also tried to find more information about Temole but had no luck either. So I asked my family and no one could give me a different answer than “that’s what your Grandma called it, and how we know it.” Yet, Temole, I believe, is a word used for this soup on the north side of Mexico, where we use native words from the Seri, Yaqui and Mayo dialect in everyday life. I’m from Hermosillo, Sonora, México and my family is from Sinaloa and Sonora, both states in the northwest.

Q: It’s such a legitimate SECRET recipe! I wonder if this soup tastes similar to any other type of soup that’s popular across families in Mexico?

A: This soup is very similar to “Cocido” which is a well known Mexican soup all over México, which is prepared with different meat and a bit more specific ingredients and no rice. So we could say, it is “Cocido” with a twist. Temole in our family sometimes followed the rule of “whatever-is-in-the-kitchen-special” because the ingredients we use in this soup are staples of Mexican cooking.

Q: How do we pronounce the word “Temole”?

A: It is pronounced: /t ɛmolɛ/. T as in tiger, ɛ as in bet, m as in mom,

o as in hope.

Warm Soup, Warm Heart. We hope you enjoy it. 🙂

Thanks for watching!
